The Kampala Metropolitan Police have reported a largely peaceful holiday period across the capital, despite an early morning residential fire in Kitende that destroyed a six-room house on December 26. Authorities confirmed that all nine occupants escaped unharmed, though the cause of the fire is still under investigation, with initial reports pointing to a possible electrical fault.
Deputy Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire emphasized that overall, the festive season has been well-managed, with crime and accident rates significantly lower compared to previous years. “Christmas and Boxing Day celebrations in Kampala were largely calm, and our security teams maintained a visible presence throughout the city,” he said.
The fire in Kajjansi Town Council sparked alarm among local residents, but prompt action by emergency responders prevented any casualties. Owoyesigyire praised the cooperation of neighbors who assisted in evacuating the occupants, highlighting community vigilance as a key factor in preventing loss of life.
Despite the minor fire incident, Kampala’s major festive gathering points, including Victoria Mall and Imperial Resort Beach Hotel, drew large crowds. The celebrations concluded peacefully under the watchful eye of both the police and the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces, reflecting effective coordination between security agencies and event organizers.
Security forces remained vigilant across the metropolitan area, responding swiftly to minor incidents and preventing any significant disruption. Police arrested several individuals suspected of phone snatching, including a notorious criminal known in the Kisenyi neighborhood, showcasing the proactive measures taken to safeguard residents and visitors alike.
Authorities also reported a single fatal road accident alongside several minor collisions during the holiday period. While traffic incidents remain a concern, Owoyesigyire noted that enforcement of road safety measures helped reduce the number and severity of accidents compared to prior years.
